The history of the Lothian Vineyard estate and its vineyard

Originally from Scotland, the Wilson family already boasts three generations of winemakers in the Cape region. Gavin and Ewen Wilson grew up at the Rust en Vrede estate in the 1950s and 60s, which at the time belonged to their grandmother. Their interest in Burgundy-style winemaking led them to meet Master of Wine Richard Kershaw, whose wines I already sell.

Lothian Vineyard is situated at an altitude of 260 to 280 meters along the River Palmiet in the Elgin Valley, a steep-sided and difficult-to-access valley. This provides a cool environment, ideal for growing grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. The soil is a mixture of clay, sandstone, rock, and organic matter, which facilitates deep root penetration.

The area is located near the Atlantic Ocean (20 km) and its cold air currents, making it the coolest wine-growing region in the country. All these geographical and climatic features allow for organic viticulture. On summer evenings, cool air descends over the Palmiet River, creating thick mists above the water that cool the grapes and preserve their natural acidity.

The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to obtain the best aromas. Richard Kershaw's primary aim is to create elegant, complex wines that reflect the unique climate and terroir of the Lothian vineyards.

The Elgin Valley region in the Overberg

The Elgin Valley is an official appellation within the Cape South Coast region, characterized by a unique geography that fosters high-quality viticulture. It is the coolest wine region in South Africa, with temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C. This valley is particularly secure and pristine: leopards still roam here. In fact, it is the only South African wine region so completely surrounded by mountains.

Geologically, the mountains are composed of quartz sandstone, which forms Table Mountain and its range. The valley soil is primarily composed of decomposed schist. The valley interior offers varied exposures, with small hills and numerous slopes. This creates a wide diversity of microclimates, making the choice of vineyard location and grape variety complex.

The Elgin Valley is a region with high wine-growing potential, but it is primarily an apple-producing area. Vineyards began to flourish in the region in the 1990s, when apple production was declining and farmers were looking for an alternative. Today, the situation is reversed: apples are more profitable than grapes, and many vineyards are being uprooted.

However, the arrival of Richard Kershaw in the region sparked a surge of interest in Chardonnay. The Master of Wine, with his creations that command premium prices, has brought the Elgin Valley to the attention of wine lovers worldwide. As for reds, Pinot Noir and Syrah are also beginning to receive significant attention. Pinot Noir wines, cultivated here for some time, are starting to improve considerably. Syrah and Merlot have also demonstrated great potential in this region. Thanks to the Elgin Valley's cool climate, excellent sparkling wines are also produced, which should attract even more international attention.
